Eileen Maxson posted a YouTube video speaking volume to the relationship between princess and prince. She shattered the ideology of it; the whole damn thing. All she needed to do was voice over the Disney movies with conversations that are all too familiar with the harsh reality of gender roles and stereotypes.
In Cinderella, you have the inexperienced guy who acts like he's done it all and in response, his coping mechanism for his own sexual failures include a backlash on his girl. He truly sounds like a real prince. Secondly, Lady and the Tramp illustrate the domestic stereotypes of a women. Lastly, Sleeping Beauty gets stopped in the woods by a random prince and or drug dealer but obviously she swoons. Mind you, Sleeping Beauty later gets kissed by said strange man in her sleep. With all this being said, young girls around the world are watching these movies and wishing they were the princess while swooning over the princes.
The message was indisputably delivered; however, I felt it was cut short. Thirty seconds into the remix, I was already rethinking every film that I watched as a little girl with a princess and a prince. What did I think was okay that really wasn't? Why obsess over an unrealistic ideology that takes away from my own self-worth as a female? There could've been more.
The remix dates back 17 years ago; therefore, technology was limited. However, the statement as a whole could've been stronger with more aspects. The remix could've benefited from the inclusion of more Disney films, music and more depth to the overall message. A combination of voice overs and the true lines from the movie would highlight the parallel between the plot line and a hyperbolized and modernized example of what these films were really saying. That being, you don't need a prince when you are a queen!
